Expert’s Advice About How To Keep Garbage Disposal Running

Garbage disposal is of great use in a household. Unwanted leftovers, food particles, and discarded peels are drained into it, which helps in keeping the kitchen neat and clean.

However, incorrect use of garbage disposal can cause inconvenience and costly repair. In order to minimize the likelihood of calling a plumber for residential cleaning service in NYC or elsewhere, here is a few experts’ advice about how to keep the disposal running-

Use cold water

Running of cold water instead of hot water is advisable because it hardens the food particles allowing garbage disposal to easily grind it up and push it in the drainpipe.

However, many may think that hot water is good for cleaning purpose, but this is their misconception! Hot water works great for cleaning most of the things, but not for garbage disposal unit.

Hot water melts the food, which get accumulates around the sides, making it difficult for the unit to carry out the process of grinding and draining the waste material into the pipe.

Run disposal regularly

To keep disposal in good working condition, regularly running the waste disposal unit is essential. Even if there are no leftovers or food particles, it is still important to run water into the waste unit. If not done so, then it can corrode, and lead to odors and clogs.

Run water for a longer time

Water should be kept running for a minute after garbage disposal has finished grinding up the waste. This ensures that food particles haven’t been accumulated on the sides and flushed out in the drainpipe, resulting in the prevention of clogs.

Cut waste into small pieces

Though garbage disposal does grind chunks of food, it is always advisable to cut waste into smaller chunks, so that the disposal can easily grind it and drain into the pipe. If not done so, it can lead to clogging or jamming of the unit making it essential to call for a plumber.

Grind citrus fruit

To prevent unpleasant odors, experts always advice customers to clean the unit with soap and cold water or grind citrus fruit like an orange, or lemon.
